Sarissa held up the blouse and looked in the mirror. “Not sure about the red.”

“Red’s a good color on you,” Cyndi said through her earpiece. “He’s communicating, but we can’t breach the encryption.”

“Confirmed.” Even at the distance that reduced Webber to a tiny figure, Sarissa could see his lips moving as she watched his reflection. She put the red blouse back and plucked a green one that was lighter and less formal. “What about this one?”

“Much nicer. And cheaper, which is great for the budget.”

“I didn’t intend to charge work, unless the boss would write it off under operational expenses.”

Cyndi chuckled. “Whatever came across his commlink was hefty. Took up a decent bit of bandwidth. And the timing fits with your observations.”

“Definitely chattier, then.”

Webber stood, tossed his cup into the nearby bin, and walked off down C-One. He was headed in the general direction of the merchants association offices.

“Break’s over, I guess.” Sarissa paid for the blouse.

The shopkeeper folded it gently and helped place it in her sling bag. She left his kiosk but walked at an angle to traffic so she, too, could proceed farther down C-One while going by a line of storefronts and still keep Webber in her periphery. “But at least we know his target.”

“No doubt about it.”

Sarissa watched Webber’s leisurely stroll. The man, if he’s not putting on an act, is entirely too pleased with himself. “Time to initiate contact with the mutual target. The sooner I can get inside eyes, the better.”
